Roads

The page I have just dumped was the one tracking the development of the new A120. We have enjoyed this dual carriageway now for many years. We have also grown accustomed to using our link to the Coopers End roundabout to gain quick access to both the new A120 and the M11. If you now look at the new two runway map the road that used to follow the Airport boundary round to the Coopers End  roundabout is forever lost under the new runway. BAA did express a willingness to build a new boundary road ( “if that was what the public wanted” ) during the consultation visit to the village, they even said they would pay for it. Look at the BAA map however. A boundary road restores links to Takeley etc but Coopers end roundabout ceases to exist. The A120 will  run through the whole Airport with no public slip roads except the one into the Airport surface access facilities. Our only hope of A120 access is to the east of the runway but even with Google Earth I can only find the most tortuous of routes round the farms and many of those roads won’t take two way traffic.

All our M11 and A120 routes in the future will have to be via Stansted Mountfitchet to the Birchanger Services roundabouts. The roundabout at this major crossroads has been in serious trouble for many years now and there have been many attempts to fix it. The Airport now has its own M11 slip roads so they no longer care. I have frequently been trapped in huge jams at this junction and like most local people avoid it whenever possible. When all the Hall road and Takeley via Coopers end traffic has to re-route through this one junction we are looking at complete frequent gridlock and frequent tailbacks onto both the A120 and the M11. While you think about that, think also about Emergency Services response times during these periods when all the rat-runs choke.

Our only hope in the future is for new roads. We need an orbital round the end of the new runway linking with slips east and west on the A12. From there we can access the motorway junctions directly. The A120 junction with all the necessary slips already exists near Little Canfield the problem is that all the roads to get to it without going all the way round via Thaxted will be under the new Airport. Be very clear however we will need a massive campaign and it will not just be for us, like it or not there are thousands of new homes to be built to support the new jobs the expanded airport will create both on and off the Airport site. Whatever the traffic situation is with the current population imagine it with new homes doubling it!
